ROSACEA

Persistent redness and irritation in combination with dry and flaky facial skin, burning and stinging.

Rosacea is a common skin condition that can cause facial redness and swollen visible blood vessels on the skin. Small, red bumps may also develop. Rosacea can flare up chronically, and though there is no permanent cure, there are treatments that can reduce symptoms.

There is no consensus on the cause of rosacea. Genetics, an overactive immune system, and environmental factors may play a role. A hypersensitivity to the sun and other environmental factors cause the blood vessels near the surface of the skin to expand and make the area appear flushed. Symptoms may be triggered or aggravated by extreme shifts in temperature, spicy foods and hot drinks, alcohol, sunlight, exercise, skincare products, drugs that dilate the blood vessels and even emotions.

People who suffer from rosacea may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

Redness in the midface
Skin that flushes easily
Visible tiny blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin
Sensitive skin
A hot or burning sensation in the affected skin
Tiny red bumps and/or pus-filled papules that resemble acne

What causes Rosacea?

While the basic process of rosacea seems to involve dilation of the small blood vessels of the face, the exact cause of rosacea is still unknown and remains a mystery.

Some of the suspected causes of rosacea are:

Genetics
Sun exposure
A mite sometimes found in hair follicles called Demodex Folliculorum
The bacteria associated with stomach ulcers known as Helicobacter Pylori
Gastrointestinal disease
Medications that cause blood vessels to widen

There seems to be a hereditary component to rosacea in a large number of people as often people have close family members with this disorder. Rosacea tends to affect the “blush” areas of the face and is more common in people who flush easily.

Rosacea Treatments

Rosacea cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. There are many treatment choices for rosacea depending on the severity and extent of your symptoms.

LED

Medical Skin Needling

Laser

IPL

Facial Massage

Skin Peels

Non-ablative Laser

In addition to long-term skincare and in-clinic treatments, you can improve your chances of maintaining rosacea remission by identifying and avoiding lifestyle and environmental factors that may trigger flare-ups. Identifying these factors is an individual process, however, because what causes a flare-up in one person may have no effect on another so it helps if you understand your own. To help you achieve this, keep a diary of daily activities or events and relate your experiences to any rosacea flare-ups. As with any skin diseases and disorders, outcomes of rosacea treatment may vary from case to case.
